17 People Who Changed the Internet Forever!
From its birth in the labs of Tim Berners-Lee back in 1992, to its interaction with the Napster in 1999, and its 2004 induction of Wikipedia: the Internet as we know it, has evolved drastically, been around the world literally, and changed the way humans live permanently.
Nothing can replace it, nothing is like it, and it has no alternative. The internet is like a diamond mine for the people who wish to acquire wealth, a profound lake of information for those who have an insatiable appetite for knowledge base, and an eternal form of entertainment for those wish to amuse themselves.
With the passage of time, people from amongst us have emerged with the craziest of ideas to test and enhance the potential of this God’s gift to mankind. And it is due to the efforts of these noble souls, that we have the entire world at the simple tap of our fingers.
In no particular order, Skidzopedia provides you with a list of those people who have influenced the Internet greatly.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin – Google Inc.
Two PhDs from Stanford University started work in the garage of a friend’s. And they were defiantly not building steam engines!
They were, however, creating the internet’s most powerful search engine. Sergey Brin and Larry Page are arguably the world’s most successful Internet entrepreneurs and developers in history. This enabled them to earn billions, while assisting everyone from high school students to particle physicists have an easy time searching for information over the internet.
Google was first launched on Stanford’s website (google.stanford.edu) and then finally on Google.com in 1997. It is estimated that GOOGLE is worth about a staggering $25 billion dollars.
David Filo and Jerry Yang – Yahoo! Inc.
Yahoo! too is the creation of two Stanford University’s Electrical Engineer graduates, called Jerry Yang and David Filo. Yang started by listing web pages on the Internet and named it “Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web”. Then, he decided to switch it to Yahoo! and the initial URL was at akebono.stanford.edu/yahoo
In December 1994, that particular website had already received over a million hits. Realizing its potential, David Filo and Jerry Yang got serious and diversified Yahoo! as a web portal.
David Filo’s net worth is $2.9 billion dollars and Jerry Yang’s is $2.3 billion dollars.
Bill Gates – Microsoft
William Henry “Bill” Gates III, is an American business magnate, philanthropist, the world’s third richest person (as of February 8, 2008), and chairman of Microsoft, the software company he founded with Paul Allen.
Gates is one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution. In the later stages of his career, Gates has pursued a number of philanthropic endeavors, donating large amounts of money to various charitable organizations and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, established in 2000.
Gates also holds the record of being the Richest Person in the world for 15 consecutive years.
Al Gore had little or no contribution towards the promotion of internet. Otherwise, Give me a valid argument.
MOOT. and chuck norris
You forgot Christopher Poole (moot) – 4chan
Well, if you think Bill G contributed… Then by that standard, JF contributed much more. He made IP-telephony accesible for the average user.
And he made a pretty penny, too. Which also seems to be a parameter to make this excellent and interesting list
J
I would have to disagree with having Bill Gates and Steve Jobs on this list.
Those two did NOTHING for the internet itself.
True, they USED the internet to grow their business’, but they did nothing to enhance, or change the internet.
and skype!
where the hell is m00t???
waite, wair is m00t?
Whoa … where is Marc Andressen, the inventor of Netscape???
Also we can thank Richard Bartle for MUD, the forefather of online multiuser adventure games like World of Warcraft.
The only think that Al Gore invented was Global Warming. He didn’t invent squat!
Jobs or Bill don’t fit the bill otherwise a pretty impressive list. Tom from myspace should be on there too..
all these huge sites and still 70% of the internet is pornography.
Where are the designers of Apache, if we want to get into server-side stuff with pHp?
Sergey Brin and Larry Page are not Ph.Ds. According to wikipedia they are on leave from the Stanford Grad Program with only a MSc.
Tim Berners-Lee did NOT invent the internet. He invented the web. There is a difference.
The internet was NOT invented in 1992. Nor was the web. ARPANet, the military precursor to the internet, was developed in the mid to late ’60s. The web was developed between 1989 and 1990.
Bill Gates had nothing to do with the internet. To this day, in fact, Microsoft has arguably not produced full internet support, given that Windows’ TCP/IP stack is a semi-broken, ugly hack which apparently works by black magic.
🙂 gr8 list indeed they have really changed internet for better and for our betterment
@ all
Give me one strong argument as to why MOOT should be included in this list?
Jack Ma? He just copied the bloke above him. Al Gore did more for the internet than that
Larry Page and Sergey Brin – Google Inc …..were defiantly not building steam engines!?!?
“Defiantly!!!!!!”
Moohahahaha !!!
Nothing about twitter?
Hmmm you’ve got a point! 💡
Stumbleupon???
Lets be realistic, stumble is a great concept, but changed the internet, I don’t think so, at least not yet. I would also question Digg as it is waning in popularity proving that it’s just a fad.
I only started 4 years ago, and I suppose the comments made already make the large point about the Internet – everybody and anybody can have their say – whether they know anything about it or not!
It also shows human nature in the raw! Nobody is EVER satisfied! I see comments made on Google users forums, made by people who would never be able to afford the programmes offered free of charge, but they are still not satisfied..!
Hey there! Love the list, but where’s Blake Ross, founder and creator of Firefox?! My cyberlife would be inadequate if not for Ross.
Nice post, but where is RMS?! About 80% of the people in this list would not be there without the free software they used to set up or code their projects…

You said “where do you think the Internet had been today if Microsoft had kept on ignoring it? ”
Let’s turn that question around … where would MSFT be today if it had kept ignoring the Internet?
Microsoft had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to the Internet party. It is still lagging behind.
It’s built-in browser lags Firefox and Opera for features and there are just a lot of things that you can do with a fresh/free install of Linux that you simply cannot do with MSFT until large sums of money have changed hands.
For instance: anybody on Linux who has an IP can also host a fairly secure set of internet services using the server software provided with each distribution of Linux. With Microsoft, they are pretty much all “optional / extra”.
Microsoft is still running behind.
This is indeed interesting. I never realize most of the founders are so young. They look so smart. I hope I can become one of them too!
Comon, You have to include my man Max

A lot of this list is garbage.
Honestly, junk. Some of the people, the ones who created protocols and literal languages are to be knighted. Bullshit social networking tools? Go fuck yourself. Billions of dollars in earning you say? Yes. Easy Wrap 2000 faired the same. This list is incomplete and half baked.
A frat boy or girl (or ex) creating a system I can use to more easily create content glorifying myself does not deserve mention on this list. Nor do they deserve billions of dollars. Fuck the free market and fuck you.
Just kidding, this shit is awesome. I am going to upload some pictures of that party last night and write a rambling homage to something entirely different.
Hey what about Louis Monier and Michael Burrows from Altavista? Yahoo wouldn’t be anything without them.
vint cerf is more important that most of these chums (Berners Lee is damn important too)
the list is very special, all we know about them is they are smart and very creative person, but first rule is to got really big imagination and dreams. thank you
Well i must say that lots of investigation have been done to write this article. I must say very nice article and all cheers to you. 🙂
Thanks for the appreciation “Rita”. I wish other people could realize the fact as well. 😀
🙄
Bill Gates is a corrupt sack of camel dung that uses his exploits in the technology sector to fund one of the most disastrous vaccination programs in modern history…Africa! And Al Gore did not invent the Internet, that stubby little goblin can’t even get his facts straight in his movie that was a complete lie.
Robert Kahn and Vinton G. Cerf without them the Internet is not possible.
😀
Wow this is a very impressive list. I use technology created by all of these people on a day to day basis. Where would be be with out these wonderful people?
Sabeer Bhatia – who invented free email for the world.
Sabeer Bhatia who invented Free Email for the world – and started http://www.hotmail.com
All but 1 of the people on the list are men, all but 4 are white men, out of 28 entries. I wonder how much of that is due to the fact that much of the pioneering work was done in the predominantly white United States.. or, for that matter, how much is due to women historically not being taken seriously in these fields in the US.
4chan is the source of essentially every prolific internet meme out there and those memes have changed the face of the internet. Moot deserves a place in this list more than gates or jobs.
The description for “Linus Torvalds – Linux” should have mentioned that Linux was the operating system that fathered the Apache webserver; the webserver with the most market share. Without which more than half the websites you mentioned here wouldn’t exist.
Can you add jackstowe? I mean it but… ten years from now, LOL! These people really deserve the success and fame because Internet is the greatest discovery of the 21th century.
How come there is no mention of Deviant Art?
Give me one good reason as to why Deviant Art should be included in this list? It actually did nothing for the betterment of the web.
@ Jackst
LoL. I’ll definitely include your name, after 10 years that is. Do contact me then. 😛
Where id the founder of Firefox?
