How to Rip a Blu-ray and DVDs to MKV using MakeMKV

Many people have managed to stir themselves up a very decent collection of movies on Blu-ray and what a shame it would be if someone was to lose them either because they lost it, the disc got scratched or simply because of their generosity to let one of their friends borrow it. Whatever the reason may be, it is a good idea to have a back-up, coming to the subject of this tutorial. It is a good idea to have a copy of these films using MakeMKV because any other back-up would have a price attached. MakeMKV is free and will help to transcoded your Blu-ray or DVD to a MKV file.

Here is what the process requires from your system:

  • Windows 7/XP/Vista or Mac OS X 10.5 and above
  • 512mb RAM (1GB recommended)
  • 10MB of hard drive to save program files
  • Adequate space for converted content

Now for the tutorial; insert your disc into the try and open MakeMKV. As soon as you open it, it will start looking for a disc and ready it up for you. Select the optical drive where it’s located and clock the green arrow.

The program will begin to remove all embedded protection on the disc so you can copy it.

Once finished, you will be asked what parts of the disc you want to backup. Everything will be checked, including trailers, and this will create one MKV file. I only wanted the main title so I unchecked everything else.

Clicking on the arrow next to the movie will open up additional info on the movie like audio and subtitles. Uncheck the languages you do not need to help reduce the size of the movie. It can make a difference of up to 6GB.

Now you can start ripping the disc. Hit the MakeMKV button. The program will also create a directory for you as well.

Click Yes to continue.

The speed of the process will depend on the power of your system. It is memory intensive but it will not damage your computer, again, depending on its power.

After some time, the program will let you know that the process has been completed.

Your file is ready to watch. Enjoy!
